Since its founding in 1976—by two physicians and a group of local citizens—Wakota has focused on addressing the needs of pregnant women and their children. For more than four decades, we have promoted and provided positive alternatives to abortion, along with the support and assistance women need to successfully carry their pregnancies to term, care for their infants, and build healthy families.
Although we are a Catholic organization, we are not a propagating arm of the Catholic Church. We serve all women in need of our services, regardless of their religious affiliation.
In 2016, Wakota affiliated with the Guiding Star Project, a national initiative to encourage alternatives to abortion and offer women a continuum of health and wellness services, from natural fertility and family planning, to pregnancy and childbirth, to breastfeeding and postpartum, to family life.
Wakota recently completed a capital campaign to fund the demolition of our existing facility and the construction of a new two-story building in its place. The new 10,000-square-foot facility will enable us to expand existing services and add new ones, such as natural fertility and breastfeeding classes as well as medical and postpartum support. Construction is scheduled for completion in the last quarter of 2021.
